HMMA GIVES $114,000 TO EXPAND ROBOTICS INITIATIVE INTO AUTAUGA COUNTY SCHOOLS

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – August 8, 2023 – Representatives from Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) and Auburn University’s Southeastern Center of Robotics Education (SCORE) were present at the Autauga County Schools (ACS) Board of Education meeting as HMMA presented a check for $114,000 to expand its HIRE program into Autauga County Schools.

Since 2019, HMMA has partnered with SCORE to bring robotics into local publics schools through the Hyundai Initiative for Robotics Excellence (HIRE). The goal of HIRE is to establish robotics teams at public schools to seed the next generation of a technically proficient workforce. After creating robotics programs in all the Montgomery Public Schools, HMMA will now expand the program to include Autauga County students as well.

“HMMA’s HIRE sponsorship has been a tremendous success in the Montgomery Public System, establishing robotics teams at every public middle school and high school,” said HMMA Public Relations Manager Scott Posey. “Sponsoring the expansion of the program to neighboring Autauga County Public Schools is the next logical step in preparing the River Region’s students with the STEM-based skills they need to take advantage of the many career opportunities that are available at HMMA and in other advanced manufacturing industries. It’s our hope that we can spread this initiative to other areas in the River Region in the future.”

Autauga County has 12 schools that include pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, most of which do not currently offer robotics programs. HIRE Autauga will be implemented in these schools across the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 school years. Schools will receive VEX classroom robotics kits or VEX robotics competition kits and the necessary competition materials. HIRE Autauga will be implemented by SCORE.

HMMA’s initial $70,000 donation in January 2020 established robotics teams at all 10 public middle schools in Montgomery, Alabama. In January 2022, HMMA presented a second donation for $78,800 to expand robotics programs to all eight of Montgomery’s public high schools. Earlier this year, HMMA gave $100,000 as the presenting sponsor of the 2023 SCORE Showdown, a premier VEX robotics competition held at Great Wolf Lodge in LaGrange, Ga.

The expansion of HIRE into Autauga County and the related donation brings HMMA’s total investment in local robotics education to more than $363,000.
